The result makes me think of Hawthorne's The Birthmark (written not very long before this ambrotype was taken) portraying scientist/philosopher Aylmer's obsession with his beautiful wife's birthmark and dream of it going all the way to her heart

For the bold pattern on this woman's dress, but especially for her strong face, and expression, and that of her open mouthed child, with a slight blur of motion lending a softness to the child's face that makes for a stark contrast. Feels like this one holds a whole world. 3 3 4" x 2 3 4" and in good condition with some light surface scratches general wear.
