Originally a ferry crossing dating back to 1739, the first wooden bridge opened on October 14, 1806. Designed and built by famed bridge builder Timothy Palmer, this structure outlasted many floods and storms. As trolley cars replaced horse drawn streetcars, a new bridge was designed by Lafayette College alumnus James Madison
