from what I understand these sorts of lined sewing baskets were made for the tourist market during the late Victorian era

Large Old Wooden Spinning Top kind Teppich was born in GermanyI love old wooden spinning tops just as a form, and this is an especially lovely one, as pure a form as can be, with a great patina to boot. Heavy and smooth, I'd probably put it on the desk to use it as a paperweight, picking it up occasionally to give it a twirl around. (I believe there was likely once a separate winding device that attached to wind it up and properly get it spinning.) 5" tall x 2 3 4" diameter at widest. Excellent overall
