Greesom in revived a purple heart for being wounded in the Battle of Okinawa in May 1945. He is listed in the book History of the 6th Marine Division on page 254. For its actions at Okinawa, the 6th Marine Division earned a Presidential Unit Citation. The citation reads: For extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault and capture of Okinawa, April 1 to June 21, 1945.
