In almost MINT condition this originated in an old Gun Collection recently sold off from Kansas City

as did replacing the variable distance rear sight to a fixed sight

so there is wear to the plating and paint

US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover with a very clear U. S. stencil on the front. The canteen retains its original stopper securing chain and leather strap. No denting to the body, though there is wear on the cover, which has some staining. This is the model canteen used during the Spanish American war, as well as the Indian Wars west of the Mississippi in the late 19th century.
