This bayonet was designed for use with the M1885 Guedes single shot rifle, of which 18,000 were in various stages of production at Steyr when Portugal decided to adopt the M1886 Kropatschek repeating rifle instead. Portugal paid for the Guedes', 8,000 of which were later completed by Steyr and sold to the Transvaal and the Orange Free State in South Africa.
