While I am uncertain of its maker or its age

I found a near twin of this piece sold online

Definitely an excellent thing to incorporate into an artwork

Antique Magic Lantern Slide Mechanical Kaleidoscope jack and very charmingI've always found kaleidoscopes pretty magical, and even better one's you don't have to look through a scope to see. Turning the handle here rotates one of two colorful round glass slides, making kaleidoscopic patterns as it shifts in relation to the static one. Just a lovely thing, especially great set near a window to hold to the light for optimal viewing. Overall: 7 3 4" long including handle. Kaleidoscope glass is 1 3 4" in diameter. Very good
